SENIOR CURATOR

The Schenectady Museum & Suits-Bueche Planetarium is seeking a Senior Curator to be part of our management team, guide the Museum’s exhibition program, and help manage, research, and interpret the Museum’s rich science and technology collections.

The Schenectady Museum serves as the New York Capital Region’s premier institution that explores science and technology and their impact on society. The Museum presents engaging exhibits, utilizing both interactives and artifacts, which focus on the intersection of science and culture from the nineteenth century to the present. The highlights of the collection include 1.6 million photographs, 20,000 science and technology artifacts, many representing significant historical developments in lighting, power generation, medical systems and broadcast media; and archival material on science and technology

The Senior Curator will guide the exhibit program, interpretive philosophy and research work of the Museum based on the Museum’s mission: “To inspire a sense of wonder about extraordinary scientific and technological development: past, present, and future”.

The ideal candidate should have a strong curatorial and exhibits background as they will be responsible for guiding the development of multi-year exhibit schedules and exhibit projects, including interpretation, content development, interactive development, project management and installation. This candidate will provide oversight of collections including acquisition, research, interpretation, management, and preservation.

Requirements:

  • BA in History of Science, Museum Studies or American History with a specialization in 20th Century History.
  • Minimum of four years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
