2008 - 2009 Home School Programs


Improve skills with hands-on, minds-on learning!

Enjoy interactive demonstrations and experimentations in programs geared to a variety of learning styles. Space is limited so parents/guardians do not attend programs (except Physics and Insects), but are invited to stay and enjoy the Museum during programs. Should you leave the Museum, we must have emergency contact information for your child(ren).

Tuesday, October 7th or Wednesday, October 8th @ 1:00-2:30pm

Physics (Ages 6-9)


Students will see a planetarium show that highlights the seasonal night sky, including constellations, planets, the Moon and current astronomical events. Students will also participate in an interactive Physics demonstration that covers gravity, momentum and Bernoulli's principle.

$8 per student; $6 Museum Members
Tuesday, November 4th or Wednesday, November 5th @ 1:00-2:30pm

Advanced Topics in Astronomy (Ages 12-15


The rising and setting of the Sun at the start of each season is duplicated in the planetarium sky, along with the Sun's elevation at noon throughout the year. The Lunar Cycle and phases are also viewed in the dome at "weekly intervals", and the phenomena of Eclipses is explained and shown.

$8 per student; $6 Museum Members
Tuesday, December 2nd or Wednesday, December 3rd @ 1:00-2:30pm

DNA & Forensics (Ages 12-15)


This fun and interesting DNA/Forensics program will allow students to work in teams and find out just who did it? Students will learn about DNA matching and other forensic tools to catch the criminal!

$8 per student; $6 Museum Members.

Astronomy (Ages 8-12)


Students will participate in a number of different activities that explain the phases of the Moon, and the relationship between the Earth, Moon and Sun. A planetarium show is also included.

Wednesday, February 4th @ 1:00-2:30pm

Basic Electricity (Ages 8-12)


We all use it...but what IS it, and how does it work? Through the use of hands-on demonstrations, learn the basics of electricity, including the hair-raising Van de Graaf generator. Learn how electricity is generated, delivered to homes, and changed our lives forever..

$8 per student; $6 Museum Members.
Wednesday, March 4th @ 1:00-2:30pm

Advanced Electricity (Ages 12-15)


Students will learn the topics covered in Basic Electricity and more! Ohms Law, Power and Energy formulas will be used to give a more in depth understanding of the subject matter.

Wednesday, April 8th @ 1:00-2:30pm

Nanotechnology (Ages 10-15)


The nano world is all around us, but we can't see it with our eyes. These interactive demonstrations explore the everyday applications of nanotechnology. Students will learn just how small nano is and what it takes to work with nano size objects.

$8 per student; $6 Museum Members.
Tuesday, May 5th or Wednesday, May 6th @ 1:00-2:30pm

Insects (Ages 6-9)


What makes a butterfly an insect? Explore the amazing diversity of insects, and why they are collected, studied and preserved. Through a hands-on activity, students create an insect that represents basic
insect biology, including their adaptive color schemes.

$8 per student; $6 Museum Members.
